Toaster ovens have had a bad rep for a long time. They are cheaply made, they are under powered, and they are not that good looking. That’s until Breville came long and changed people’s perception on what a toaster oven can be.
The claim that they have made major improvements to toaster ovens fixed the major flaws and added functionality consumers have been asking for. One such example is the Breville Mini Smart Oven.
Is Breville all talk? Can they actually back it up with an improved product? We will find out today. We will go through the major features, and how they will benefit you. And we will show you where you can buy this oven if you feel like it’s met your expectations.
Element IQ was designed by the engineers at Breville to make cooking that much easier. They have programmed the Breville Mini Smart Oven to the optimal setting for every occasion.
Different cooking style requires different heating. For example, to toast, both the top and bottom heating element has to heat equally hot. When you want to broil, the top heating element has to be extremely hot, while the bottom ones don’t have to be as hot.
The best thing is, you don’t have to worry about any of that. It’s all pre-programmed. All you need to do is select what you want to make, and it will make it. You can even make adjustments, and this toaster oven will remember it for the next time.
Is It Complicated To Use?
Not at all. The control is super easy. The big start and cancel button are easy to spot. You can also choose from the presets that include: Cookie, Reheat, Pizza, Bagel, Toast, Bake, Broil and Roast.
The LCD screen shows you the temperature, and you can adjust the temp/darkness and time/number of slices easily.
Another great feature is the temperature conversion button. If you are following a recipe from outside of US, you don’t have to convert the temperature manually, just hit the convert button, and you are all set.
The frozen food function automatically adds more time when you are making frozen items.
You will love the “A Bit More” button. If you see that your toast (or whatever it is you are making) is almost done, but just not quite where you want it…select the A Bit More button, and the oven will automatically add a couple of minutes to the cooking time.
It’s A Powerful Toaster Oven
Yea, I know it’s called a MINI oven, but there is nothing mini about its power. The only way to properly bake, roast, broil…etc is with a lot of heating power. The flaws of most compact toaster ovens are they can’t heat up high enough. If you want golden brown and crispy crust, then you need that heat.
The Breville mini toaster oven has 1800 watts. That’s the same as its bigger brothers, the BOV800XL, and BOV650XL which costs about $30 to $100 more.
Perfect For Size And Budget-Conscious Shoppers. We don’t all have Martha Stewart’s kitchen nor her wallet. For those who have small spaces to work with, the Breville Mini Smart Oven is a great fit.
But don’t let the size fool you. It packs 1800 watts, which is more than some full-size convection toaster ovens.
This is also the most affordable oven out of Breville’s toaster oven line up. It might not have all the fancy bells and pretty whistles, but it does what it was designed to do beautifully.
How Much Does The Breville Mini Toaster Oven Go For?
As some of you already know, the Breville Mini Smart Oven was a William-Sonoma.com exclusive. Only they carried this model. The list price on their site is $200. However, seems like more and more stores are carrying this model. Amazon.com for example also has this exact model on sale. Which works out great because Amazon doesn’t charge for shipping.
It’s A Great Alternative To Your Microwave
Microwave does certain things well…except making food delicious. If you want to heat up some leftover coffee, by all means, use a microwave. But if you want some golden brown crispy chicken, you’d get better result with your iron than a microwave.
There are people who bought the Mini Smart Oven just for the reheat function. If you have the choice of pizza reheated in a microwave or an oven, which would you pick? 10 out of 10 would say an oven.
A toaster oven is also more versatile. It can bake, roast, toast, broil…etc. It’s exactly like a big oven, except much smaller.
It’s A Great Addition To Your Big Oven.
The best thing about the Breville Mini Smart Oven is how fast and efficient it is. Say you want to make two baked potatoes…doesn’t it seem like a waste to heat up that HUGE oven in your kitchen?
Wouldn’t it be better to use a smaller toaster oven for that purpose?
I mean, unless you are cooking for a family of 8 every day, a lot of times, a toaster oven is the perfect appliance. You can use it alongside the big oven. While you bake the main entree in the big oven, you can heat up the side dishes with the Breville Mini.
Why Is The Mini Smart Oven’s Heating Element Better?
Because the material used is better. Other toaster ovens use cheaper metal, like nickel in their heating element. Breville uses quartz. Quartz responds to heat changing much faster, that means the temperature in the oven is much more accurate.
You won’t get the wild temperature swings from other ovens. The more you can control the heat, the better your food is going to taste.
How Big Is The Breville Mini Oven?
- This oven stands at 16″ x 13″ x 9″
- The interior is 0.45 sqft
- You can cook an 11″ pizza or 4 slices of toast.
Does It Come With A Warranty?
Yes, it does. You will get a one-year manufacturer warranty with this Breville toaster oven.
Are There Any Issues With The Mini Smart Oven?
Lets take a minute to also look at some possible negatives when it comes to any appliances. There aren’t too many complaints about the Breville mini smart oven, though there are a few things people have brought up.
1.) Price. This is not the cheapest toaster oven out there. And it wasn’t supposed to be. It’s a high-quality toaster oven made of high-quality material. Breville doesn’t make cheap knock-offs.
2.) The buzzer. Some people have a complaint that the buzzer is too loud. Which kind of makes me wonder…isn’t the point of a buzzer to get your attention? If it’s quiet, how are you supposed to hear it?
3.) The handle. This is a minor one. Some people thought the handle is a little too big on a compact oven. I guess they have a point. But I rather have an oversize handle than to burn myself on the hot oven any day.
What Have We Learned?
We learned that just because a toaster oven is compact, doesn’t mean it has to be under-powered. We learn that just because a toaster oven is affordable, doesn’t mean it has to be made cheaply. We learned that good things do come in small packages.
It might not fully replace your big oven, but it’s a great appliance for everyday meal preparation. It’s quick, it has plenty of power, and it has smart functions you are not going to find in comparable toaster ovens.
The Breville brand is synonymous with quality, functionality and great design. Seems like they’ve done it again with the Breville Mini Smart Oven.
